Cheap Brush Tips: Worth It?

I found these brush tip markers at Dollar General for under $15! You can also get them on Amazon. To be fair, you usually get what you pay for when it comes to most stationery. I got these when I had first started bullet journaling and wanted some brightly colored markers to spruce up my journal. That was in May. Now that it's December and I know more about marker quality, I'm ready to give an honest review.

  • Color: The brightness these markers have really wowed me. Although it bothers me a little that the colors on the packaging don't perfectly correlate to each color, e.g. purple is a bit lighter and more pinkish than the packaging indicates, the colors are still very vibrant.

  • Durability: For such a low price, these markers have lasted a while! By now, they're frayed on the brush tip end, but that's to be expected. They haven't yet run out of color, though, so I've trimmed the brush tip ends to preserve them a little. Of course, how long they last will depend on the smoothness of the paper you use, so if you're using them on regular notebook paper, they won't last as long. Smooth bullet journal paper is perfect.

  • Springiness: These markers in particular aren't very springy, so you may want to find something else if you're doing serious calligraphy. They were perfect, however, for a young bullet journaler like myself to learn how to do the basics of calligraphy and to highlight my notes.

  • Bleed through: These definitely left some shadowing on the other side of my Leuchtterm pages, but I don't really mind that at all. They didn't bleed through even once.

One of my favorite things about these is that the caps of the markers stack nicely on the marker itself. Overall, these were a great find, and you should definitely pick some up! They're definitely worth the price.
